JoSAA 2026 Counselling

JoSAA counselling is the next big step after JEE Main and JEE Advanced. Through this one process, students can get seats in IITs, NITs, IIITs and GFTIs. Now, the JoSAA 2026 counselling registration is going LIVE soon. The choice filling link for IIT admissions will also open on the same portal. So, all qualified students must watch this update very closely.

What Is JoSAA and Which Colleges Take Part?

It is helpful to understand JoSAA in simple words. JoSAA means Joint Seat Allocation Authority. It is a common body that manages admission to many central engineering colleges.

Through JoSAA, you can get:

  • IIT seats using JEE Advanced rank
  • NIT, IIIT, GFTI seats using JEE Main rank

Major Institutes Under JoSAA 2026

Type of College Approx Count Examples
IITs 23 IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, IIT Madras
NITs 31 NIT Trichy, NIT Surathkal
IIITs 26+ IIIT Hyderabad, IIIT Delhi*
GFTIs 30+ BIT Mesra, Assam University, etc.

*Some institutes may use own rules; always check JoSAA list for 2026.

Therefore, one JoSAA form can open doors to many good colleges at once.

JoSAA 2026 Registration Dates, Schedule and Official Website

Knowing the schedule is very important. Even a small delay can stop you from getting a seat this year. So, you must check dates again and again.

The exact calendar for JoSAA 2026 will be shared after the JEE Advanced result. However, the pattern is almost same each year.

Who Can Register for JoSAA Counselling 2026?

Not every student can join JoSAA. There are clear rules. So, before you register, you should see which group you belong to.

You can take part in JoSAA 2026 if:

  • You have a valid JEE Main 2026 rank → you can apply for NITs, IIITs, GFTIs
  • You have a valid JEE Advanced 2026 rank → you can apply for IITs (and also NITs/IIITs via Main)

If you did not clear JEE Main or JEE Advanced, then you cannot use JoSAA. You must look at other state or private counselling processes.

How to Register and Fill Choices in JoSAA 2026

The registration and choice filling are done online only. Therefore, you must take some time and do it carefully. A small mistake here can decide your future branch and college.

Keep ready:

  • JEE Main / Advanced roll number and application number
  • Date of birth
  • List of colleges and branches you like, in order

Step-by-step JoSAA 2026 Registration & Choice Filling:

  • Go to josaa.nic.in
  • Click on “Candidate Login”
  • Login with JEE Main / Advanced application number and password
  • Check and confirm your personal and exam details
  • Click on “Registration / Choice Filling”
  • Read all JoSAA rules and click on “I Agree”
  • See the list of available colleges and branches for your rank
  • Add choices one by one in order of preference
  • Use move up / move down buttons to arrange choices
  • After checking many times, click “Lock Choices” before deadline
  • Download and save the locked choice list PDF

Once you lock your choices, you usually cannot edit them again for that round. So, think calmly before locking.

Understanding Freeze, Float and Slide Options

During seat allotment, JoSAA will give you one option for each round. Then, you have to choose how you want to use that seat.

Three common options are:

  • Freeze: You accept this seat and do not want upgrade later.
  • Float: You accept this seat but also wish to be considered for a better college/branch in later rounds.
  • Slide: You accept this college but want a better branch in the same college in later rounds.

You must choose these options wisely based on your rank, dreams, and risk level.

JoSAA 2026 Cut-off: Opening and Closing Ranks

Cut-off in JoSAA means the opening rank (first seat) and closing rank (last seat) for a branch in a college in a round. These ranks change each year. They also depend on category, gender, and home state quota.

Still, past data gives a very useful idea. It helps you see if your dream IIT branch is realistic for your rank.

Example: JEE Advanced Rank vs IIT CSE Chance (Very Rough Idea)

AIR Rank (General)* Possible Chance for CSE in…
Top 300 Old top IITs (Delhi, Bombay, etc.)
300–1,000 Mix of top and other old IITs
1,000–3,000 Newer IITs CSE / old IIT other branches
3,000–8,000 Non-CSE branches in many IITs

*This is only a broad picture from past trends. Real cut-offs for 2026 will come after rounds.

For NITs, you should check “Opening and Closing Ranks” on JoSAA site for last year to plan your list.

Tips and Common Mistakes to Avoid in JoSAA

Because JoSAA is complex, many students make simple but serious mistakes. If you avoid these, you will be ahead of many others.

Common Mistakes

  • Not registering at all because “I will only join private college”
  • Filling too few choices (for example, only 5–10)
  • Putting only top IIT CSE branches and no backup options
  • Forgetting to lock choices before the last date
  • Ignoring category and state quota rules while planning

Helpful Tips

  • Fill a long list of choices, mixing dream, target and safe options
  • Always keep some branches in NITs and IIITs, even if you want IITs first
  • Check last year cut-off PDF for your category and think in rank ranges
  • Use a notebook to plan choices before entering them on the site

Good planning in JoSAA can sometimes improve your final college more than a small change in rank. So, spend enough time on this step.
